DUBLIN AIRPORT, CHECK-IN AREA 14 FIT-OUT

PJ Hegarty led this project to create a vibrant, modern and much-needed check-in area capable of handling up to four million passengers a year, which marked the first phase of new development within Dublin Airport. Alongside our partners, we transformed an existing double-height basement storage area within the terminal into Check-In Area 14, adding 25 new check-In desks, a ticket office, and 12 self-service kiosks. The check-in area measures about one quarter of the existing floor area of the terminal and was delivered on time and within budget.

HAULBOWLINE ISLAND EAST TIP REMEDIATION

PJ Hegarty carried out the design and build of the remediation and capping of Haulbowline Island East Tip in Cork harbour, one of most stunning natural harbours in the country. We worked alongside our highly skilled partners to transform the area from an 650,000m³ industrial waste tip — created between 1961 and 2001 by Ireland’s only steel works and filled with steel scrap, slag, asbestos and other hazardous materials—into a multi-use public park.

PJ Hegarty as part of the ICON Consortium won the tender for the M50 (Phase 2) PPP Contract in September 2007, a major infrastructure scheme to upgrade route capacity and improve one of the most congested motorways in Europe. The project broke ground in September 2007 and was completed in October 2010, delivering a world-class route upgrade while causing minimal disruption to the local environment and economy.

Building on an esteemed reputation for civil engineering expertise and a proven track record on PPP projects, PJ Hegarty as part of the ICON consortium undertook construction of the N6 to Ballinasloe in 2007 — the most ambitious road project ever completed in the West of Ireland. The scheme extends from Doughiska, east of Galway City, to the existing N6 east of Ballinasloe in Co Roscommon, bypassing Craughwell, Kilreekill and Ballinasloe. The mainline comprises 52 km of motorway and 4 km of dual carriageway including five grade-separated junctions The scheme also includes a 7-km link road to Loughrea and approximately 32 km of side roads and link roads.

CARRIGRENNAN WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT (WwTP)

P.J Hegarty worked alongside our partner VINCI Construction on the design, build and operation of the Cork wastewater treatment and mud-recycling plant at Carrigrennan, on the Little Island peninsula at the mouth of the Lee River. The plant was the final component in the city’s water-sanitation network and was an important capacity upgrade required to meet the needs of a population of 250,000.

GAS PIPELINE TO THE WEST

This major civil engineering project to construct the longest gas pipeline in the history of the Irish state was hugely challenging, requiring close partnerships with skilled international contractors and the deployment of almost 2,000 staff. Planning a project of this magnitude was extremely complex—the 350km pipeline crossed seven counties, 450 roads, railway lines, canals and rivers, while cutting through properties of over 1,300 landowners. The diversity of landscape and habitat presented further challenges and sensitive ecological issues which were successfully overcome.

PJ Hegarty’s work on Thornwood Apartments was another achievement in our industry — winning the Opus Architecture and Construction Award in 2007 in the housing category. The stylish modern development features 152 apartments, four townhouses, eight penthouses and a crèche, all built around a communal landscaped courtyard.

THE ELYSIAN

PJ Hegarty was commissioned to build The Elysian Tower in Cork and when construction was completed in 2008 it was the tallest building in Ireland. The Elysian is a landmark in Irish property development and was a key forerunner of Cork’s future docklands regeneration. Standing 68 metres tall and visible from much of the city, the 18-story tower houses 211 apartments, ranging from one-bed to three-storey ‘triplex’ penthouses. It quite literally brings apartment living in Ireland to new heights.
