The first twenty-five years of the new millennium saw PJ Hegarty move into a new league of capability and scale. With Ireland evolving into a high-growth, globally connected economy, the company responded by delivering projects that were larger, more technical, and more strategically important than ever before. This period is defined by infrastructure that supported national progress, landmark civic projects that modernised public services, and complex facilities built for world-leading clients across data, pharma, aviation, commercial, and heritage sectors.
It is also the era where PJ Hegarty’s footprint expanded beyond Ireland in a formal and sustained way. The opening of the first UK office in 2010 reflected confidence in the company’s civil and infrastructure expertise and marked a new phase of cross-channel delivery. From early 2000s PPP projects to hyperscale data centres and major aviation works, PJ Hegarty entered the centenary year as a contractor trusted with some of the most demanding and high-profile projects in Ireland and the UK.
Early 2000s
Major infrastructure projects became a defining feature of this era. PJ Hegarty contributed to landmark schemes including the M50 expansion and upgrade, and the gas pipeline to the West, strengthening Ireland’s transport and energy networks for a new generation.
2009
In 2009 PJ Hegarty delivered its first Public Private Partnership project, the Central Criminal Courts Complex. This award-winning development was Ireland’s largest courts project in over 200 years and signalled PJ Hegarty’s growing role in delivering major civic assets through modern procurement models.
2010
One of PJ Hegarty’s most extensive and high-profile undertakings of the century arrived in 2010 with the fit-out of Dublin Airport Terminal 2, alongside the build and fit-out of Pier E. The project reinforced PJ Hegarty’s growing aviation credentials, combining scale, technical delivery, and operational precision.
2010
That same year, PJ Hegarty delivered The Elysian in Cork City, which became Ireland’s tallest residential building at the time. It was a visible symbol of the company’s ability to execute ambitious vertical builds in complex urban environments.
2010
PJ Hegarty established its first UK office in 2010, focusing on civil engineering and infrastructure projects. This milestone marked the formal expansion of PJ Hegarty’s geographic reach and broadened the company’s operational platform for future growth.
2016
In 2016 PJ Hegarty delivered its first hyperscale data centre for one of the world’s largest global data providers. This marked a strategic shift into digital infrastructure and laid the groundwork for a major portfolio of hyperscale projects that followed.
Late 2010s to early 2020s
This era includes some of PJ Hegarty’s most impactful commercial projects, such as ESB Headquarters on Fitzwilliam Street, IPUT’s 10 Molesworth Street, the Salesforce Tower in Dublin Docklands, and Penrose Dock in Cork. These developments reflect modern Irish commercial growth and PJ Hegarty’s position at the centre of it.
Recent years
PJ Hegarty continued to deliver across high-value sectors including heritage restoration, advanced pharmaceuticals, and global client facilities. Notable projects include the Midleton Distillery Experience for Irish Distillers, the Tropical Fruit Warehouse redevelopment, and major pharmaceutical projects for clients such as West Pharma, Pfizer, and Boston Scientific.
2024
PJ Hegarty’s aviation capability extended into the UK through works at Gatwick Airport, including enabling works connected to Pier 6 and critical airfield infrastructure projects. These works demonstrate the company’s growing impact in UK transport delivery.
